Good Day Racers...
With the race coming quickly upon you, and from what I understand...this year there are many of you. There are a number of things that you should be focusing on to make sure your training efforts have not been wasted over the last few months.
Having trained hundreds of endurance athletes over the last 15 years, I can promise you that the "devil is in the details" when it comes to your success on the big day.
Here are a few of our most valuable tips:
1. Don't forget to taper. Your last 7-10 days before your race should not be a mad rush to improve your time on the bike, trail or canoe...it should be a phase where you maintain a "connection" with the "skill" and focus on your pre-race nutrition and hydration.
2. Hydration. Don't rely on staying hydrated by consuming an increased amount of fluids on race day. If it is unseasonably warm, you may find yourself down a few litres of fluid within a couple hours of the start. Low fluids will contribute to a less efficient body. Cooling, metabolite removal and valuable energy can all be affected significantly without a proper hydration plan. A hydration model should be introduced up to 5 days prior to the race and can be a difference between "cramping up" (or worse) and an ELITE PERFORMANCE.
3. Nutrition. Carrying a couple extra pounds around on race day may suit your average "weekend warrior", but will not help you when you are looking to add more "hardware to your collection". A proper diet should accompany your training model up until a week before your race that keeps you lean, mean and ready for anything. For the last week of the "race prep", your "hydration model" and nutritional plan will go hand in hand...allowing fluid, valuable energy and nutrients to be stored to allow you to perform at your best on the 25th of September.
As your day gets closer, your plan should evolve to ensure that nothing is overlooked. A winning time or your PB is not a coincidence, it is a well balanced and thought out game-plan that will allow you to enjoy your day....and the stories of how you kicked the Swamp Donkey's ass.
Until Next Time,
Onward and upward,

Swamp Donkey...
...with the big race only 2 and a half months away, your training should be in full swing.
Your success is not a coincidence, it is a choice. Having trained many very successful adventure racers, I know that the successful training program does not just take place on the bike, in the canoe or on the trail. It starts in the kitchen....
If you are a "mileage athlete" you probably aren't that concerned about balancing your calories, but what you should be concerned with is making sure your body gets what it needs at the right time to ensure that it can adapt to the training that you have introduced to win this race.
My first piece of advice is ditch your Canada's Food Guide. It is for "average Canadians" and if you are not sitting on the couch for 2 hours a day...you are not average.
Next, spend some time getting to know how YOUR metabolism works. Spend some time with a trainer who can recommend some foods and supplements, always with scientifically backed references of course. Then, once you make your choices based on those recommendations, your trainer can and will administer and review a urinalysis feedback program to make sure your body is getting what it needs.
After all, you spend so much time trying to get better, why not make sure you are using your valuable time wisely.
As always, if you have any questions...please call ELITE HIGH PERFORMANCE CENTERS at 831-6758.
Until next time,
Onward and upward,

Good Day Adventure Racers...
We are extremely proud to be involved as a major sponsor and ‘OFFICIAL TRAINING CENTER' of the 2010 Swamp Donkey Adventure Race.
If you are familiar with ELITE, and know our long history training CFL, NFL, Hockey Players and Physique Athletes you may be asking what we are doing as the TRAINING PARTNER of the Swamp Donkey Race.
Well, it is a little less known that we have been the trainers of many of Manitoba's finest racers...with athletes like the lovely Katrina Rosen, Kurt Gibson and Dawn Richardson, our team of ELITE professionals have helped many racers of Adventure Races, Marathons and Triathletes cross the finish line with Personal Bests.
Over the next year we will be here to offer you tips on training, injury care and nutrition to help you cross the finish line in your record time.
After all success is not a coincidence, it is a choice...and it is yours to make.
Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence
Talent will not, nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent
Genius will not, unrewarded genius is almost a proverb
Education will not, the world is full of educated failures
Persistence and Determination alone are omnipotent.
Onward and upward to Race Day,
Jeff Fisher
