Run!... In the Forest!!... Run!!!

"My momma always said ... you can tell a lot about a person by their shoes, where the go, where they've been. I've worn lots of shoes". This is one of my favourite quotes from one of my favourite movies! While the context of this quote makes a profound statement let's just say, I've worn a lot of shoes and "worn-out" a lot of shoes. This month we are going to feature trail running: the benefits, training, gear, locations and some events.

There are so many benefits to trail running. The trails absorb some of the shock on your joints from when you run on asphalt and concrete. But more importantly, there is a tremendous rejuvenation of spirit that comes from being surrounded by trees and animals. The weakest link for safe trail running is the ankle. Actually running on trails will strengthen them, but if you need some extra help you can jog on a mini tramp or use a BOSU balance trainer.

Look for shoes that have aggressively knobby soles and are more rigid than road running shoes. Other equipment includes wicking garments, water bottles, sunscreen, sunglasses, gaiters, Gore-Tex socks, insect spray, and ivy block. An alternative way to carry water is use a hydration bladder with drinking tube carried in a backpack or waist pack. Some trail runners use ultra-light hiking poles to increase speed and stability. For all your trail running needs check out the great folks at Wilderness Supply.

Winnipeg and Manitoba is home to many great trails from a short run of Beaudry Park to the extremely challenging Mantario Trail. Basic navigational skills are much more important on some trails. Carrying maps when training in unfamiliar areas is highly recommended, as you may cover large distances and veering off course is not uncommon, especially in some areas where signage is limited.

Want to "get your feet wet" and try an event? Start by contacting Manitoba Recreational Trails Association or Trail Run Manitoba for more info.

Till next month, I'll leave you with this... "From that day on, if I was ever going somewhere, I was running!... That boy sure is a running fool".

Ahhh... I've been called worse!
John
